How You Can Help

Here are some ways that you can help support the One Planet International School.  Please note that currently donations are not tax-deductible in the United States, but we are working on that.

Hidden Gems Scholarship Fund
Providing Scholarships Primarily for Orphaned Girls & Street Girls

For each classroom, the One Planet International School offers at least one scholarship and any needed materials or clothing to a child, preferably an orphaned girl.   You may contribute funds for a full or partial scholarship in the honor of or in memory of a loved one, or towards one of the scholarships listed below.  A full one-year scholarship which includes funds for tuition and materials is US$850.   Donors will receive a receipt and a profile of the child who is awarded the scholarship.    Currently, donations are not tax-deductible in the United States.

Scholarships for the 2006-2007 Academic Year

If you would like to contribute any amount ($20, $50, $100, $200, $500, $850 etc...) towards one of these scholarship funds, or would like to start a new fund in honor or in memory of a loved one, please write to HiddenGems@oneplanetschool.com

Susie Clay Memorial Scholarship
Susie Clay "believed (and was impelled to tell every girl, boy, woman and man whom she met, in the marketplace and on the bus, as well as in the conference room) that promoting girls’ education is a prerequisite not only for social and economic development, but through its influence in establishing the equality of men and women, is a necessary requirement for the achievement of world peace."  "In one of her most gratifying accomplishments, Susie was the inspiration and prime mover behind an innovative national scholarship program for elementary-age Mayan girls to attend school in Guatemala.  This program ... was later replicated in several other countries in Africa as well as in India."   Her friends and family mourned around the world when she left us prematurely but gracefully of multiple myeloma. She passed away peacefully at home on November 9, 2005, with her son and daughter at her side.  We are pleased to offer a scholarship in her memory.

Zekre Abay Selfless Act Scholarship
Zekre Abay is a person who exemplifies what it means to be selfless, to serve others and to love children.   He thinks of others before himself.  If someone calls him and asks for assistance, he will drop whatever he is doing, no matter how busy his own schedule may be, and will come to the aid of a friend or even a friend of a friend without hesitation.  Anyone reading this who knows Zekre, will be able to retell an account of how Zekre helped them.   This school was started in hopes of raising children who are radiant and selfless and desire to help others before their own selves.  We are happy to be able to offer this scholarship in honor of Zekre Abay.

Maria Meredith Literacy Scholarship
As our family was packing our things to move to Ethiopia,  Maria Meredith heard of our desire to start a school.   She happened to be working for an after school program that was shutting down.  She arranged for a tremendous portion of the books and resources from the program to be donated to our future school.   We were able to bring more than 2,000 children's books in our shipment due to Maria's thoughtfulness.   These boxes of books helped us to become even more determined and committed to starting this school.   We are pleased to be able to offer a scholarship in her honor:  The Maria Meredith Literacy Scholarship.

Volunteer Your Time

If you live in Addis Ababa, you may volunteer to assist in many different ways such as creating teaching aids, reading stories to children, developing curriculum materials or training teachers.  Call, e-mail, or visit the school for more information.

We also accept volunteers from abroad to serve in different capacities for any length of time
.  In particular, we need volunteers who can help with teacher training, curriculum development, learning disabilities and other special needs.   We are also seeking a youth year of service volunteer to serve at the school.   Please e-mail HiddenGems@OnePlanetSchool.com for more information.

Capital Improvements and Expansion

Next year we will be adding three more grade levels to the school, and we will be expanding into the neighboring compound.  We will need to construct classrooms and playground facilities.  The materials and construction costs will be approximately $12,000.  Currently we are renting our facilities, and so we are also in the process of looking for land to purchase for the school so that we may build our own permanent facility that will meet the needs of the school in the years to come.  If you are interested in contributing towards capital improvements and expansion, such as building new classrooms, repaving the grounds, developing a safe ground cover for underneath the playground equipment, or helping us to acquire land please email us at HiddenGems@oneplanetschool.com.
